Bothan Banter – GM’s Corner Special: The Faction System

We’ve received many requests for a look into the faction system. Below is a breakdown by series GM Kurtis Wiebe including a downloadable file for you to take a look at with every faction in the game. Spoilers in the file, you are warned!

Faction Capture2

Campaign Episode: This actually should just be the update number, as they don’t necessarily happen on every episode. Only when I, as the GM, feel there would be a shift naturally in the story.

Scheme Success: Pretty obvious, answering whether or not the new scheme succeeded or not.

Effects of Scheme: A detailed breakdown of what happens within the faction, or affected factions. This can include increase or decrease in influence, resources or even gaining a ‘tag’, which will be explained below.

New Scheme: The faction’s plan after their previous plans succeed or fail. Sometimes influenced by the actions of the PCs.

Resources: An overall view of their wealth within the world, 0 being broke and 10 being as wealthy as a faction can possibly get. It’s not a set number of credits, but a generalization of their resources. Factions spend resources to make schemes easier to complete. Also will be explained below.

Influence: A summary of how much pull the faction has within City 17. It represents their ability to effectively execute schemes.

Alliances: A current list of allies the faction has.

_________________________________________________________

Tags: Randomly created after the success or failure of a scheme, with random effects determined by the GM that would be fitting to the outcome.  In the above example, Modo’s faction gained Armed to the Teeth which granted -3 to Risk on Gather Resource checks. These can be anything the GM imagines, other examples from A Nar Shaddaa Gamble are: Being Watched (Triggered once another tag of this kind activated, Illegal Tariffs (+1 Resource per faction update until removed), Angry Populace (-1 Influence per faction update until removed).

Gather Resources: A faction can Risk any number to gain that number of resources. Ex: Modo used Piracy to Risk 5 to Gain 5 Resources. The higher the Risk the higher chance of the job going bad. When Risking, the faction chooses a type (Piracy, Hacking, etc) and a level of risk (anywhere from 1-10). The GM then rolls 1d10. If the number is greater than the risk, the task succeeds with no complications and on their next update will have additional resources equal to their risk. Tags can increase or decrease odds of success. If the roll is equal to or less than the Risk, it is a failure, and there will be an update in the next Effects of Scheme box indicating as such, with a related consequence. (Hacking: Attempt blocked and discovered, appropriate tag triggered)

Influence: Any time a non- Gather Resources scheme is enacted, a faction rolls against their influence. To succeed, they must roll their Influence total or less. As with Gather Resources, tags can increase their influence (making it easier) or decrease (making it more difficult). Finally, a faction my expend resources to increase their influence for that single roll. All resources used in such a way are spent, regardless of the outcome.

A faction may also attempt to remove a negative tag by committing a New Scheme to the task. They must still roll against Influence to successfully do so, and may even spend resources to help the process,.

PLEASE NOTE: The sheet below is reflective of a system that has grown and changed over the course of its use. Some rules and notes contradict what is shown above. The rules in this blog post are the most recently revised version and trump what is in the attached document.

A Nar Shaddaa Gamble Episode 6: Consequences

Previously on a Nar Shaddaa Gamble

While in the service of Challu the Hutt, every member of the crew found themselves on diverging paths.

Ocadessa discovered the meaning behind the connection she had felt to the mysterious Ko’Darrak, a Twi’lek of noble birth who once trained at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant before something he called the Purge. She uncovered that as a young boy he had been forced into hiding with his master, who was eventually killed, and Ko’Darrak was forced to fend for himself, utterly alone.

It was also revealed that Ko’Darrak had certain intentions visiting Ocadessa, and that he had plans for her future with an offer to train her in the ways of his ancient tradition. That she, alongside Ko’Darrak might be the very last conduit of the living Force.

A hyperspace jump away, Quelben was betrayed by the very pirates he was delivering cargo to on behalf of Challu. With the help of Imalyn, a hired gun in the employ of the mighty Hutt, they fended off the attack and made plans to turn the tables and strike back on the station where the remaining pirates were holed up. But not before an impromptu sexual encounter that has left Quelben asking many questions.

And as the awkward Duros enjoyed space sex, matters had become much more complicated deep in the bowels of Challu’s estate where Doc was hired to extract information from a perch boy in the employ of Taulba the Hutt. Overwhelmed by moral conflict, Doc eventually chose the payout but managed to spare the young man’s life. At a cost, however, and in a dark turn of events, Doc revealed that the boy’s life was in exchange for his allegiance.

Meanwhile, Muzzo, Talia and their new counterpart Grodo, had tracked down the location of the now cowering Modo the Hutt and his motley crew to Cantina 50. With little planning, they jumped to action, springing an ambush on their new nemesis and his right hand, Echo. In a flurry of blaster fire, Muzzo and Talia were quickly repelled and the traitorous Grodo swore allegiance to Modo in an attempt to spare his pitiful life.

With an escape barely made, they piled into their city speeder only to see a rather sinister droid waiting their return. And before any action could be taken, the heavily modified security droid clicked a button that engulfed the vehicle in deadly fire.

Bothan Banter – GM’s Corner Episode 3

image1 (2)

A luxurious GM’s Corner where Kurtis Wiebe talks about both Episode 4 and 5 of the Nar Shaddaa Gamble as well as some pertinent advice in running games where the player’s word is law.

See some behind the scenes manoeuvring involving the faction system and uncover how it played directly into a handful of scenes over the past few episodes. Kurtis finally digs into some real major players, including Challu the Hutt, Ko’Darrak the fallen Jedi and abolished faction of Modo the Hutt!

A Nar Shaddaa Gamble Episode 5: Devil’s Due

Previously on a Nar Shaddaa Gamble

Despite a secured release by the machinations of Challu the Hutt, the exit from Docking Bay 47 Holding Facility Alpha was anything but smooth. Jailed in the illustrious company of Echo and two of her counterparts, the crew couldn’t have expected a full on assault by Modo the Hutt himself to retrieve his right hand woman. In a brutal firefight in the facility lobby, both Modo and Echo were grievously injured before making good on their escape.

Meanwhile, Ocadessa felt a strange spiritual pull that led her to the severely wounded Ko’Darrak. After a brief conversation, she agreed to help the dying Twi’lek and bring him to his employer, Challu the Hutt.

It wasn’t long before the entire crew found themselves in front of Challu, a hutt of significant power who offered an apology for the botched job against the Empire. What was meant to be an act of vengeance against a former ally had become a nefarious trap with the Crew being the quarry.

Challu also offered the team a home, a place to work with good pay and significantly less risk. He only had one request: Deliver Ember Lokin.

But not everyone is so open to dealing with a smiling devil.

The question is: who will stand alone?

A Nar Shaddaa Gamble Episode 4: Criminal Justice

Previously on A Nar Shaddaa Gamble:

With a small cadre of Rebel Alliance operatives in tow, including Froadick the Wookie and Evie, the Crew made a hasty retreat to their ship, the SS Abrams, with hopes of assisting the turncoat ISB agent, Ember Lokin, off planet. But a snag at Dock 47 Customs involving Talia led to the revelation that while someone had flagged her name, it wasn’t City 17 or the Empire. Someone was looking for her, with no information as to who. Or why.

With some deft slicing at the hands of the rebel saboteur Evie, the entire crew made it past the customs officer by tricking him with a typo on his screen.

But all was not well in the foyer of Ramps 11-20. A series of explosions rocked Ramp 11 while the Crew made for their ship. An intense firefight broke out between a pack of ruffians led by a crazed woman in body armour and a wounded and desperate Twi’lek by the name of Ko’Darrak.

While the Crew knew only that he was a higher up criminal leader, it was Ocadessa that felt something… deeper. A spiritual tremor unlike anything else she’d ever felt before.

There was no time for reflection and soon the ship soared from orbit and into hyperspace.

It was here that the Crew met with Admiral Jan Stock, the direct superior to Captain Ziggy, on board the Corellian Corvette Reliance.  With Ember delivered, Admiral Stock asked for her team to be delivered back to City 17 so they might continue their work. The Crew agreed to the request, with a promise to stay in touch with Froadick and Evie and work alongside them if there was ever need.

Upon return to City 17, the maniac soldier they saw earlier ambushed the Crew with a handful of armed men. In a brutal firefight, the woman’s team was cut down and she captured. But not before a detachment of City 17 militia surrounded the ship and demanded their immediate surrender.

Outgunned and outnumbered, there was only one option.
